Own the means (tools, robot, place) of production

With automation spreading everywhere workers should still own the means of production In the past it might have been an animal or tools. These days everyone has to be alert to where the opportunities lie and make sure they have ownership of the means for creating wealth. With many jobs being replaced by automation workers should make sure they have a share in the device that replaces them.

Reputation, Attention, and Trust (and what others) can be used in a mechanism to aid in "strategical allocation of attention".

I read an interesting article by Ross Gittins in the Sydney Morning Herald. He had read a book by Jonathan Haidt "The Righteous Mind: Why good people are divided by politics and religion". Haidt (pronounced Height) is an academic in moral psychology at University of Virginia. The book's web site is http://righteousmind.com His theory expands on the model of altruism in societies to a model of morals. Haidt gives a six-dimensional model of morals: care vs harm, liberty vs oppression, fairness vs cheating, loyalty vs betrayal, authority vs subversion, and sanctity vs degradation. One interesting outcome he has found is those who would class themselves as small-L liberals have morals only based in the first three dimensions where as conservatives operate using all six dimensions. It would be interesting to apply the model in teaching groups from small to massive.
Gittins final remark is telling in the current political debate. "Haidt argues the community benefits from the ever-present tension between the two sides - each emphasises import aspects of maintaining a good society - if only we could restore a greater degree of civility between the contending parties."

Howard Rhiengold is interested in Attention too. I have many of those tools. I should try using them the way he does.

Recommender systems use data on past user preferences to predict possible future likes and interests. This paper shows an algorithm that uses diversity instead of similarity to improve accuracy without using semantic or context-specific information.

Bret Taylor's presentation on The Future of your Online Presence is worth analysing. He talks about Filters (Group friends so you don't miss updates - your friends select items interesting to them but your social network would have different groups such as relatives or work mates);Clustering (Cluster related entries to highlight important topics and reduce volume); and Ranking (Automagically pick the "best" entries). Ranking is done using explicit signals (user action), implicit signals (social graph, topic or content of entries), and external signals (global importance or general interest). The way signals are used at FriendFeed reminds me of Neural Networks.
